1. Related traits between species must occur at the same time: 

For survival, some species require others to help with self-cleaning, such as when small fish clean off their predators. Unless complex changes in the genetics of both predator and prey occur, a fish genetically intent on cleaning its predator will only be helpful in providing lunch, and will not be around to reproduce this tendency.

2. Related traits within a species must occur at the same time to avoid extinction. 

The Bombardier Beetle has cannons which spray out irritating solutions.  The presence of spraying mechanisms must occur along with the ability to produce the irritating spray itself.
